New Law Boosts Reusable Bags

Have you noticed? As of January 1, 2026,  many stores may no longer sell or hand out plastic bags, including those made with recycled content.

To cut down on plastic waste going to landfill, plastic bags are no longer allowed to be distributed at supermarkets, grocery stores, liquor stores and convenience stores. A new law allows stores to offer only recycled paper bags, and each store-provided paper bag will cost the customer at least ten cents.

Why this law?

You’ve probably seen plastic bags floating around, littering the ground and eventually getting washed down the drains and polluting our waterways. The law aims to cut down on plastic waste.

Note: Bags without handles used to protect goods (produce, meats, bulk items, Rx bags, etc.) are not affected by the expanded law.

But it’s OK!

We don’t need plastic grocery bags and we don’t want to pay for paper so…we use reusables! By bringing your reusable bags to the store every time, you’ll cut down on plastic waste and save money in the bargain. Thanks, Livermore!

Is Your Local Store or Restaurant Following the Law?

If you are aware of a retail store or eating establishment distributing single-use carryout bags, not charging for paper or reusable bags, and/or not itemizing bag charges on your receipt, we want to hear from you!  See the form here. We are relying on consumers to help us reach out to shops and restaurants not complying with the new law.
